SRW5500 Edit Mode
on May 2, 2011 at 8:19:09 pm

I am attempting to do a simple machine to machine edit using an HDW1800 as playback.

When I push either the recorder or player button, both light up. I can't get it to choose one or the other. When both are lit, both machines start and stop.

RS 422 cable is connected to the 9 pin I/O spigot as that is the only one that has worked for this function in the past. When I connect to the 9 pin IN, and push the player or recorder button, they light but do not stay on.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

RS422 should be connected to the I/O connector on the Master VTR, the one you intend to use as the "edit controller/mastering deck", and to the "In" RS422 connector on the Slave deck. Remote the slave deck and you should have control of it as the "P" select.

You mean "Old Ben"? Ben Kenobi?

I've never used Parallel mode before but that's what Parallel mode is supposed to do. To enable many machines to be controlled from one panel. Check that (A) you are lighting up Remote-9P and NOT Remote-50P on the playback deck, and (B) that there isn't a big parallel cable hooked up between these two decks. That might be a clue...

Mark and Joseph - Thanks!

Yes, I thought the same thing - it looks like a parallel control situation. But I can't find a way out of it.

RS422 Control is connected just as you describe (I even dug out an old Sony cable and bypassed everything to make the connections). No other control cables are in place.

In the SRW-5500 manual, there's this in the menu:

203 PARALLEL RUNNING
Selects whether two or more VTRs can be operated
synchronized.

disable: Synchronized operation is not carried out.
enable: Synchronized operation is enabled.

Note
For synchronized operation to be possible, this item must
be set to “enable” on all of the connected VTRs.

Check the VTR Setup menu on both machines and make sure this is disabled (if it's there).

Thanks, Mark.

Menu setting 203 was enabled. Disabled and now everything is happy.
