Does anyone know if the 5500 can be upgraded to do the new functions of the 5800/2? According to their press release, the 5800's can be upgraded:

"The updated SRW-5800/2 recorder deck will be available this summer. It will support 2K recording and playback at both 2048x1080 and 2048x1556 modes, MXF file transfer of the SStP codec and the new “SR-Lite” 220 Mbps data rate, and 96KHz audio. It also supports double speed record and playback, as well as 3D content record and playback of 4:2:2 & 4:4:4 RGB. Customers who own current SRW-5800 models will be able to add this new feature set to their existing devices with the addition of an optional HKSR-58UK upgrade kit available this summer."

According to the rep at Sony's demo in NYC last night, it's 5800 and 5100 only for upgrades. That could very well change since none of this is ready. I saw the web interface for the 5800 in action though. Pretty cool (transfer data to/from deck over gigabit ethernet), but the files it makes (220 Mbps MXF "SR-Lite" and 440 Mbps MXF "SR") only work currently with Vegas. Rep said they're working on plugin for Avid and FCP. It also allows you to capture DPX and TIFF and layoff DPX as data for resolutions above 2K. Will be sweet - don't expect it for a little while. And sadly, most likely no upgrade path for 5500...
