Hey Ron,

Is it correct that you are shipping the 1.5TB drives in the 12TB enclosure? Are you finding any heat issues with these new drives?

Hey Bruce,
We have been testing for about 3 months and have seen no visible issues with heat. The 1.5 only comes in the AS version and not the NS for the time being. I will keep everyone posted if we see any changes and I will also check with our Seagate contact and ask him to reply as well.

Hi Ron,

Why no NS version? Just hasn't rolled off the line yet, or is there a greater issue?

Special thanks to James Knight for posting here...

I think Seagate will skip 1.5 NS and move to 2TB in Q1. I will confirm with Seagate. At this time there are no plans to go forward with 1.5 NS.

When canvassing the OEMs, STX found that most preferred for the next capacity of NS drives to be 2TB rather than 1.5TB to minimize transition management and product qualifications, so the NS product folks skipped the 1.5TB and started working directly on the 2TB.

I am the High Capacity Product Line Manager with Seagate. The Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB actually has heat reduction compared to the 1TB ST31000340AS and ST31000340NS. If you define operating mode as 40% read/write, 40% seek, 20% idle, the 1.5TB has operating power of 10.8 Watts and the 1TB has operating power of 11.16 Watts so the 1.5TB should actually operate cooler.

A long with the great air flow with in Maxx Digitals chassis, the drives run very cool.

Hey Bruce!

I have been also testing the new 1.5TB drives (supplied by Ron) and find them not only faster then the 1.0TB, but also cooler. They easily sustain read & write speeds of over 100 MB/s on a individual basis...

Cheers

Peter
