NEW BUG IN MAC OS-X 10.5.6 with "old" MAC Pro

Why should it be easy.
This is not a Maxx Digital problem, nor a Cal Digit problem, nor a G-Tech problem, nor a Dulce Systems Problem, nor a Sonnet Problem.

THIS IS AN APPLE PROBLEM. I was just informed about this problem by Dulce Systems.

There apparantly is a bug with OS-X 10.5.6 that BREAKS the Apple Expansion Slot Utility in "older" original MAC Pro Intel based MAC computers. Which means that if you have ANY storage card AND a capture card (from AJA, Blackmagic, etc.), all the slots will RESET and CANNOT BE CHANGED in OS-X 10.5.6. Which means that one of your cards will be running at a x1 slot speed, which will prevent all Blackmagic, AJA, and hi speed storage cards from working. (Slot 4 remains stuck at x8, while slots 2 and 3 are at x1).

SO, if you have a new MAC Pro - upgrade at your leasure. If you have an OLD MAC PRO that uses the Expansion Slot Utility - DO NOT UPGRADE TO MAC OS-X 10.5.6.

Bob,

Do you have to have a storage card in the older Mac Pro? I have the 1st gen 8-core 3 Ghz Mac Pro running 10.5.6 and the expansion slot utility work fine here. I have a Kona 3 card but no storage card as it is on the Zelin San network : )

Actually, I see what you are seeing. Expansion Slot Utility should be set to option 2 but reverts to option 1. But when you look at System Profiler, it tells me my Kona 3 card in slot 3 is Link Width: x4

So it's running at x4 but the Expansion slot isn't working.

this is what I was told by Dulce Systems.
Older MAC Pro computers (the ones that relied on the Apple Expansion Slot Utility) have an issue with OS-X 10.5.6. This is an Apple issue. It doesn't make a difference what cards you have.

I am told that this is the default for the older MAC Pro's -
slot 1 - x16 lane (this is your monitor graphics card)
slot 2 - x1 lane
slot 3 - x1 lane
slot 4 - x8 lane

So if you have an AJA card or a storage card in slot 4, you are ok. But if you have one of these cards in slot 2 or 3, the MAC will revert back to a x1 slot, making it too slow to run ANY card (other than a firewire card). This is the issue.

I do not have an older MAC Pro here, but I have confirmed this information with several other manufacturers. this is why you are seeing "general warnings" not to upgrade to OS-X 10.5.6. No one can deal with this issue, as it's up to Apple to fix their Expansion Slot Utility problem with OS-X 10.5.6, with their own olderMAC Pro computers.

That is all I know at this time. If you have a newer MAC Pro that does not rely or use the Expansion Slot Utility, then you can upgrade to OS-X 10.5.6 with no issue.

well it happened to me and I do see the change in the expansion slot utility, I have a kona 3 card installed and a apple fiber channel card also.
However everything seems to be working ok even when the ES utility says it's running below normal speed.
So I wonder if it's just a bug that happened in the ES utility but does not change the way the slots works.
any other feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Warren Eig helped identify the problem, and reported directly to Apple. This is a "cosmetic" issue in the expansion slot utility. It does "stick" - it does not change back to a x1 slot, but it LOOKS this way in the expansion slot utility.

So, it does work, but the display on the MAC OS does not reflect this. Pretty insane - huh ? Thanks to Warren Eig (and not Apple) to identify this.
