Maxx EVO OS-X 10.5.6 problem fixed
on Dec 23, 2008 at 8:55:01 pm

Hi -
I have just verified that the new drivers work with OS-X 10.5.6.
If your drives have "disappeared", there is NO REASON to revert back
to OS-X 10.5.5. Just load the new driver (which appears as
V132.81223), load WITH DRIVER, reboot your computer, and your problems will be over.

Hi Bob,

What is the best method for deploying this update? Install the new drivers, then do the 10.5.6 update, or the other way around?

Also, the Maxx Digital website mentions that the updater only works with Firefox. What's up with that?

Thanks,

as you may have already experienced, Safari often "quits" when in the MRAID interface. Mozilla Firefox has no issue. With OS-X 10.5.6, the MRAID GUI is worse than ever with Safari. Sometimes it takes 5 or 6 tries just to log in with MRAID (or even if you just go to Safari and type in http://localhost:81 - it still gives you these issues.

but if you open Firefox (a free download from Mozilla), there will be ZERO problems. Don't like this - neither do I, but it's currently a fact of life with OS-X 10.5.6.

I have not tried the "reverse" situation of installing the drivers, and then the update. I have only been "stuck" in 2 situations. Old systems with OS-X 10.5.5 updated to OS-X 10.5.6. The drives disappear, you then update the SAS driver, and the drives come back.
AND the other situation is new systems with OS-X 10.5.6, never had any disk drive controller or drivers. Install the "old" driver, and you see nothing. But then, go and install the NEW driver, and everything works.

I know what you are asking - you are saying "I NEVER want my drives to disappear. So if I update the driver NOW at 10.5.5, reboot, and then update to 10.5.6, will I NEVER even see this problem - will my drives mount no matter what ? " I dont know - I never tried this. No matter what, once you have the new driver, and the new OS, there will be no problems. I advise that you turn off your drive array when doing any updates to any brand drive SAS or SATA or SCSI controller (and certainly the operating system).

Thanks Bob,

Before I continue, thanks for working this stuff out.

Under 10.5.5, I DL'ed Firefox, DL'ed the new MRAID installer from Maxx Digital, and ran it. It kept quitting during the launch, just after the authentication step.

So then I ran the 10.5.6 update from Apple, and yes, the array went away.

Ran the installer again. Same lack of install failure.

Reboot.

Ran the installer again. Same failure.

RE-downloaded the installer (now "...-2"), ran THAT, rebooted, and all is good.

Don't know why, but it worked and now I can go back to work now without having to cross my fingers that someone will not be "helpful" and update the server while I'm not looking.

Thanks again,

I'm having the same problem - installer won't get past the authentication. I enter my password for the system, the installer pauses for about 10 seconds, then quits. I've downloaded about 3 times. Nothing but an installer that won't get past authentication. I've rebooted, turned the raid on, turned it off, tried everything I can think of to get the installer to run.

Any ideas?

Hey Frank,
Are you using firefox? The new drivers do not like Safari.

Hi Frank -
ok, so you go into MRAID , and you can't "get in" - right ?
It keeps asking you for the password over and over and over again, and you can't get in - right ?

THANKS APPLE.

go to GOOGLE. type in Mozilla Firefox. Download Mozilla Firefox. (This takes 2 minutes - I just did it today). Follow the simple instructions. You don't even need to reboot your MAC after installing. (Firefox is an ALTERNATE web browser to SAFARI).

OK, now launch Firefox. Type this in in the address line -
http://localhost:81 and then hit the return or enter key.

it will ask you for your name and password - proceed as usual.
WOW, you are in- with no bulls#$%. (your name is admin, your password is 0000).

Thanks Apple !

Not quite...

I use FF to download from maxxdigital MacPro update (I have new MacPro). I receive install_mraid_macpro.zip. It decompresses itself into install_mraid_macpro. I double click on it, and a window opens asking me to authenticate. I click on the little padlock icon, and I am asked for my system password. I enter my password, and after 5-10 seconds, the installer window closes and the program quits.

I'm thinking there must be instructions further along the installation that explain the http://localhost:81, because when I type it, in FF, all I get is: Failed to Connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:81.

REPLY - do not launch MRAID. After you install your new 10.5.6 driver, reboot, wait for 60 seconds, and go directly to Firefox and type in http://localhost:81.
Once you are asked for name and password, type in admin and 0000.
If you still can't get in, I suggest that you call Maxx Digital for phone support.

Thanks for all your effort, Bob, but I get nothing at localhost:81. It really doesn't seem like the installer is doing anything.

I will give tech support a call in the morning.

Ron,

Thanks for your above-and-beyond assistance. I'm grateful and impressed. I've gotten myself running and working. As soon as I complete the project, I'll will get back in touch for assistance in installing the upgrade.

The product worked great out of the box, and the service and response make this a great purchase.

Happy New Year.
