Did 10.5.6 break the Areca card RAID? I heard rumors of this.

Dear Valued Customers,
I am writing this post to let everyone know not to upgrade your Apple OSX to 10.5.6 until further notice. We are diligently working on a fix for the Leopard update of 10.5.6. . We have identified the problem and we are working with Apple engineers to have a solution by the end of this week. All of you that have already downloaded this update have nothing to worry about, your data is safe. Please stand by for further updates and Thank You to all for your support.

Happy Holidays.

[Ernie Franic] "Do you have any update on a fix?"

Depending on how helpful Apple is, fixes can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

Honestly, there is nothing in OS 10.5.6 that is necessary for video editing that I've seen. None of our three suites are running 10.5.6 and probably won't be for some time.

That message was more directed to the Maxx Digital folks since they suggested that a fix might be out by the end of the week (which technically speaking is today.)

On another note, I would say that 10.5.6 is essential for anyone whose machine provides services to the Internet (FTP) since there are documented security flaws patched in there..

1) does anyone know how to downgrade FROM 10.5.6? I just purchased a machine with the update on it.
2) Along with the machine, I purchased a Maxx 8TB rackmount raid that I for the life of me cannot figure out how to turn on. There is no on-off switch, so I assume that it powers up when power is applied to the power cord, but I get nothing. Am I missing something obvious?

So... I crank up our editing system today and FCP can't find any media files!! Check desktop - no raid! Check cables (did the cat crawl behind the box again?), reset card, etc., no luck. Go to MaxxDigital website, start to send a service email, then think about CCow. First thing I see is Zelin's ominous message - I'M ON MY OWN - check computer - YES, somehow I upgraded to 10.5.6 (don't even remember doing it). Scroll down - there's already a fix!! Download it, reboot, all is again right in the world of documentary film.

Thanks Ron, and Happy Holidays!!

You have learned several things.

1 - don't update anything before you check with the manufacturers who make the equipment that you own. This not only includes Maxx Digital, but AJA, Blackmagic, Matrox, and all the others. NEVER ASSUME that Apple has helped these companies when they upgrade the Operating System. Let me tell you in advance - if you upgrade to Snow Leopard (OS-X 10.6) when it comes out before getting approval from EVERYONE, you are a fool.

2 - buy from legitimate companies. This not only includes Maxx Digital, but the other professional companies you see advertised here on Creative Cow. When you see posts like "hey, I built my own RAID from stuff I found on this website, and I only spent $2000" - these people are SCREWED - they will never get support from a profesional company, who puts the effort out to make sure that these updates are addressed in a timely fashion. What does $2000 mean when you are now OUT OF BUSINESS ?

3 - upgrading your operating system does not make your editing system better or faster. Upgrades to Final cut Pro are worth it - upgrades to Adobe Production Studio are worth it. These programs are how you make your living. The operating system is there for only one reason - TO RUN THESE PROGRAMS. There is simply no reason to upgrade your operating system, if it's not called for by the applications you are running. No one will think you are "cool" for upgrading to OS-X 10.6 when it comes out, if there is not a new version of FCP, or Adobe, or whatever you use that will require it.
Operating systems are not "cool".

Another lesson would be to keep a full system back-up around on a separate drive to be able to restore your system after an accidental update. I got the drives to mount after "restoring" my entire system from a borrowed drive (with 10.5.5). Thanks to Ron & Bob for their instant help with the issue!
