Slimy Text Effect

Hi everyone! I'm in need of some help. I want to know how to make this effect on some text:

Does anyone know how to make text look like this in Illustrator? If not Illustrator, then Photoshop? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey man, the neuron came out pretty good! I just used the pen tool in Illustrator and ended up making a pattern brush for the spine of the neuron. And then I used the pen tool to make the neuron nucleus..came out pretty damn good!

Cool.

For this, it looks like maybe Helvetica text with hand drawn art on top.
The highlights and shadows look very much airbrushed.

You can probably handle the shadows with drop shadow, in AI.

The hardest part might be the highlights.

Yes, you could do this all in AI, but do you need to?

I'd do the type and structure (the line art, including the drips, and maybe also the stripes) in AI.

The example below uses; a font, hand drawn drips, offset structures to create the highlights (using Pathfinder > Divide), Inner Glow filter, Drop Shadow filter, and gradients.

To inspect the effects, go into the Appearance palette (with an object selected) and double-click the FX icon.

Note: This is just a quick'n'nasty. You could obviously spend more time on it.
