Reverse mask?

I have a created a shape with the pen tool and it has a solid color. I have created another smaller shape with the pen tool that has no fill. I would like to use this smaller shape to cut out a portion of the larger shape. So, I would like to end up with my larger shape having a hole that is of the shape of my smaller shape. Is this possible? Thanks!

(I'm running CS 5.5 on a mac)

Are you looking to punch a hole in your Larger shape? if so ...

you need to use the path finder tool. normally i leave the path finder tool window open all the time.

window / Pathfinder

if you select both paths and click on one of the shade modes you will get a new result. I would do a search for a tutorial on the pathfinder tool... it is very powerful.

but if you just play around with the buttons you will figure it out... Also look in the layers pallet as you can see the layer changes to a compound path...

also try playing around with the different pathfinder buttons... the pathfinder pallet is really great for creating interesting shapes.
