Exporting 2.7MB vector art to .psd file. Illustrator freezes
on Jan 5, 2011 at 3:24:22 pm

Hi. I have a vector art .ai file of a map of the world. The size of the .ai file is about 2.7 MB. I want to export it as a .psd file.
When doing so Illustrator freezes.

Sometimes it freezes immediately. Other times it first gives me export options and freezes after that. In any case, it does not produce the .psd file.

Using Illustrator CS4.

Can someone possibly help me figure out how to do this successfully?

note: tried exporting other smaller files, no problem.

Looking forward to your replies. THX!

Hard to say... Could be something in the file, could be your system...
If you get a chance, update your profile with your system specs, hardware, cpu, ram, os, app versions, etc.

Maybe make sure all layers are unlocked, then Select All to see if there are any stray points somewhere outside the artwork.

Maybe the artwork is too big for your system.

Can you try opening the AI with Photoshop, then just let Photoshop rasterize it?

Hi Vincent, thanks for the reply.

I updated my profile with specs.

I tried unlocking layers, didn't help. Is that really necessary? I've been able to export locked layers before, but I have no idea if it is something that could cause problems.

Opening the .ai file in Photoshop... well I did something similar which worked. I copy/pasted the vector art from Illustrator into Photoshop as a smart object. That worked!

So.... right now, the important thing is that I can continue working.
Yet, if you see something in my specs that could be causing this problem, I'd sure like to know anyway.

Thanks again.

Unlocking layers/objects is just to make sure you can select all objects in the document, before you Select/All, to search for stray points. If the points are locked, you wouldn't be able to select them or see them.
This is a different thing then doing some kind of prep for exporting layers.
I've seen AI files fail to export when there are stray points, and from the size of the art just being too large.

In the past, I've reconstructed problem AI files by copying and pasting all of the parts into a new file.

Pasting into a Photoshop file is good too. I often like to have Smart Object versions of my files.
You should also be able to open the AI file with Photoshop.

I'm guessing your RAM is 4 GB. Your specs seem fine, great HD setup!
