how to cut out a shape from multiple layers / objects?
on Oct 15, 2010 at 10:07:42 pm

Hi,

So I have a path (a circle) which has a gradient... Then I have another path with an oval overlapping the circle with a layer style of "overlay" and some transparency, creating a reflection/shine sort of effect..

My question is, I have a letter that I want to use as a 'selection shape' and place it in the center of the circle and copy the gradient / overlay layer effect in the shape of the letter and paste it so that I have both the shape, and a 'cut out' of it... I have not been able to figure out how to do this exactly..

Thank you.

Layer 2 (Letter)
Letter Shape
Oval Overlay
Circle

Layer 1 (Background)
Letter shape
Circle

Select the 3 elements in layer 2. Then use object >> clipping mask >>make. Your top object (the letter) will mask out the other elements underneath in your selection.

Then select you 2 elements in layer 1, and use pathfinder >> minus front.

Obviously after you create this you will not notice any difference, until you move one of the two layers. It is like using a cookie cutter on dough, but with much more digital precision.

Hi,

I am a little confused... How do I have "letter shape" and "circle" in two layers? Am I supposed to duplicate these layers? really?

Yes, copy to the clipboard and use paste in front or back
