Vector Rings

I am relatively new to Illustrator CS3, but do have a good understanding of how to use it. However, I am having trouble with this piece of artwork. I would like to reproduce these rings in a vector format so that I can enlarge them and not loose any of the quality. I especially need to know the best way to add the highlights of the rings. Thanks so much for your help.

You can try using either the blend tool or the gradient mesh tool. A gradient won't work because it only goes horizontally or vertically (radial won't work either) but can't follow
a path like you need in here.

Another option is to add a white stroked path and apply a blur effect on it. Effects in Illustrator are calculated each time yu scale the object but if you make it too big your file will become very slow.
