Filmy background on psd files in Illustrator

Hey,

I'm hoping someone can help me take care of my problem.

I am edging up on a deadline really fast.

I have a signature of my CEO in a tiff file (I don't know all the deets because I've only been here 3 days).

I placed the file in an Illustrator doc.

When I printed it, there was a film in the background (even though it was save with a transparent background and has been used in the past without issue).

This film looks like a 10% or 20% transparency like you'd create with an overlay.

I have tried creating a clipping mask.

I have tried revealing the layer masks, editing them, disabling, unlinking.

I even tried using the paint bucket to change the background color to match the background of the document I am creating.

Still no dice.

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I need to know how to fix this problem and how to avoid it in the future.

Is it simply a setting or something?

I have been experiencing this in CS3 at work and also in CS2 at home with other documents.

I just don't get it.

Your problem likely is a color management issue.

In illustrator
edit >> color settings >> emulate Illustrator 6 (this really means color managemen

Then try
File >> Document Color Mode >> CMYK

If not color management than a transparency flatter issue.

One idea would be to create a path of the signature and export that path to illustrator. To do this I would convert to B & W & do a mask of the signature based on its color. Then I would convert the mask to a path and export.
