Dear PS & ILLUS. Pros,

What's the best way to get that super high contrast black and white effect that was made famous by this image of Che Guevara?

Also, is there a unique name for this effect in the design community?

Regards,

Hi, I would get rid of the background, then convert image to greyscale and adjust the contrast, then either:
Image> adjustments> Posterize> 2 (you may have to go back and play with the contrast to get it like the Che image)

or Filter> Stamp and play around with the sliders, then clean up any random bits with the eraser tool make the solid black and white chunks.

Sorry this is a bit rushed, my 2 year old daughter wants me to play with her.

In Photoshop, Image > Adjustments > Threshold, and no need to convert to monochrome first. Adjust the slider for the desired effect.

I did it here with Posterize:

But you could also bring it into Illustrator and use LiveTrace (Or live Paint) to convert it to vector art.
