Cut Objects Below in Illustrator
on Jul 20, 2005 at 7:27:54 pm

HI,

I am using Illustrator CS2 and have a filled object. On top of that I have another filled object. I want to use the top object as a cookie cutter to cut it's shape out of the filled object below it so that I can delete it out of that object and leave a hole. For example, draw a circle filled. Take another circle and place it on top. Make it smaller then use it to cut a hole in the larger bottom circle. Delete the circle I just cut into the larger circle and end up with a doughnut. I have tried using the Divide objects below command but it does not work. How can I accomplish this.

Thanks for any help.

Try using a compound path mask.

Create the big circle, then create the smaller circle, make sure the smaller circle is on top of the big circle. Go to the object pull down> Compound path>make.

Place over the object you want to mask, select both the mask and the object (Make sure the mask is on top)Go to the objects pull down>mask>make

That should give you what you want
