Making a Gradient Template for import to Final Cut Pro project

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out this problem for a week or so - with help from the internet and Richard Harrington's book - but I can't seem to figure out a solution. I'm working as an assistant editor on a documentary, and the editor asked me to create a gradient template for use in FCP. I'm using Photoshop CS5. We have interviewees in profile against a black backdrop. The interviewee occupies about 1/4 - 1/2 the frame. The editor would like to fill the empty part of the frame with a still image - different images for different interviewees. Subsequently, to streamline her process, she would like me to create a template that can be dropped in the timeline along with the media clips. I'm familiar with how Gradients and Image masks work in Photoshop, but I can't seem to figure out how to create this particular template. Any advice / guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Matt
