strange new brush

The default brush that used to come up whenever I used the Eraser (or other brushes) seems to have been replaced by a new one with jagged edges ...

my old brush didn't have the jagged edges and gave a lovely even soft edge when set to max softness ... this one seems to have a kind of ramped softness ... ie at the centre the graduation is soft but it gets harder towards the edge ... I guess I accidently changed one of the brush settings but can't for the life of me work out which one .... please help !
thanks in advance ....
Alan

Hi Alan,
open Window>Brushes (F5) and untick any Brush Presets that might be selected. Also check your "Brush Tip Shape" (first Item on the list on the left of the Brushes-Window). You might have selected some wired shape by accident. If that is the case you just need to select the normal round one again and everything should be fine.

Hope that works,
Simon

It happen if the brush is set to 'Full Brush Tip' in the Cursor setting under Preferences dialogue box. Change that to 'Normal Brush Tip', and you'll get a clear circle even if you bring down the hardness slider.

'Full Brush Tip' will include all the pixels under the cursor. Basically, it is showing how far the falloff is happening, adjust the hardness slider to see.

'Normal Brush Tip' will show only the brush size and minus the falloff.
