Erasing Single Layers

Straight to the point, how do you erase only the selected layer in Photoshop? I seem to erase even locked layers when I try to erase things

There are a couple things here. 1st if you want to get rid of the whole layer you can just drag it from the palette into the trash. 2nd you want to make sure your eraser settings are set so that they don't erase more than the selected layer. Also make sure you are using the normal eraser tool, not the background eraser or magic eraser.

How do I assure these things and where are the settings located?
Thanks

If you click and hold on the eraser tool it will give you a pop up of the different eraser tools, from there you can see if you have the regular eraser or something else. The settings then will appear at the top of the screen right under "file, edit, image, etc". Also make sure you have only the layer you want to erase selected in the layers palette and that its not locked to any other layer. That should do it.
