removing a background that isn't a background

Hi anyone and everyone,
I have an image that I am using as a template for acatalogue that will be used over and over again. What I need to do is remove the white background from the image so that its goes on the background of the page I will be putting it on, but I can't just turn it off as it isn't a layer in the image.
I have tried selecting it and deleting it and saving it with a different name, I've created a new document with a transparent background but then when I open it up later the white is back again.
I really want to be able to do this so I can fit more of them on the page, and so the background of that page is more visible and doesn't have all that annoying white in the way.
Please help! I am hopeless.
Mike

Make sure you are saving in a file type that saves the transparancy data, like .PNG or .PSD
