photoshop retouching

I was wondering if anybody could give me any tips as far as retouching photographs.
Im a photographer and I would like to know how to get a more alternative or crossed processed
look to my photos. Does anybody know what I mean? If you pick up any mag right now Im sure
there are examples of these photos, they look more like paintings or anamations. If you need an
example look at this photographers website Sasha waldman.
thanks for the help

If you want us to look at a website please include the link.

One piece of advice is always make a duplicate of the orignal layer and work on the copy.

That seems like a simple effect. Here are a couple of ways you can go about creating it:

1. Duplicate the original photograph.
2. On the duplicated layer, change the brightness/contrast drastically. (for example: increase the contrast by + 35)
3. Apply a gaussian blur of 5 or so on the duplicated layer.
4. Reduce the opacity of the duplicated layer to around 50%.

Obviously there are various other ways of reproducing these sort of effects, but if you have a specific one in mind, please ask.
