Importing & Smart objects
on Dec 17, 2012 at 5:39:32 pm

I have a logo roller with about 8 logos in some have alpha channels some don't. I want to replace one of the logo when trying to do so I can't workout a couple of things. When I drag a new logo into the PS project (which is a .tga with an alpha channel) the logo comes in not displaying the alpha just the original version. Also why does PS insist in making the logo a Smart Object layer? Is that why it isn't displaying the logos alpha properly?

So far i know tga doesn't embed alpha like PNG. You can add alpha 'channel' along with the file.

Here's the step.

1. Make a selection your logo (make sure you have the running ants around your logo) (it doesn't matter even if you have background layer)
2. Go to Select > Save Selection
3. Under the Channel option select new (if not selected)
4. give it a name (optional)
5. Click OK, that'll be saved as a new channel in your channel palette (you can open and see)

6. Save your file and select tga option.
7. Below the save options, check the 'Alpha Channel', which will include the new alpha channels which you have created (this option won't display if you haven't created the new alpha channel.)
8. Click Save, and check '32 bits/ pixels'. Do not select the lower bits, it doesn't work.
9. Done.

10. Open your file again (or drag and drop), open the channel palette you can see your saved alpha channel.
11. Load the alpha from Select > Load selection
12. Click your alpha name and click load and extract your image.

Iam not sure if there's any other method. Let me know.

Thanks for the reply!

I think you have misinterpreted what I was originally asking.

I can easily create an alpha from an image by just selecting the portion of the image through a 'selection' then simply going into the channel panel and clicking on the mask option.

What I was having trouble with was when I then tried to import/insert that image (with alpha) in another PS project it imported/inserted as a Smart Object. When it came in as a Smart Object there wasn't an alpha and thus no transparency like the original file. So my question was how do you import/insert a file into an existing project without it becoming a Smart Object?
