multiple paths on one layer

I want to learn how to use vector masks. When I try to "lift the pen" and draw several paths on one layer, Photoshop (CS3) creates a new layer.

For example, I'd like to draw a vector mask which creates a solid circle. Then, I want to draw a triangle inside the circle, and delete the triangle, revealing whatever is below that layer.

It must be terribly obvious, as I've been looking in PS Help and not finding a clue.

Use the pen tool and make sure the far right icon is selected (exclude overlapping path areas). Draw out your circle. Then draw out the triangle. Then, in the paths palette, select the "Load path as a selection" button at the bottom of the palette. It will make a circular selection with the triangle cut out. You can then use that to mask off something in a layer. Is this what you were trying to do?
