Alpha Channel

I'm trying to understand how exactly the alpha channel works.

Any image that has any transparency whether it's partly transparent or fully transparent has to include an alpha channel right?

Also, does the video card handle the alpha channel before it sends the image's data to the monitor so that the only things ever sent to the monitor are R, G, and B channels even if the image also includes an alpha channel?

Thank You

Pretty much anything black on your alpha channel will be invisible (masked) anything white will be visible, so yes, any image with transparency will contain an alpha channel, even when you do not create it manually, such as a png file or even an .ai file.

Regarding the video card, I have no idea...
