splitting RGB channels

Hi,

I want to create an animation with 'red' 'blue' and 'green' characters who then all combine in to one big RGB character.

I have tried split channels so I have my 3 grayscale images, but not sure what to do next. How would I recreate an RGB image having edited the layers?
Is there a blending mode I should be using?
Can I export to After Effects as a grayscale image and get AE to recognise my channels for me?

Thanks

Ben
