Removing hard shadows Produced By Flash

Hi all... I've shot some images that have hard shadows produced by my flash. How do I "cover" them up? What tool would be best? I've tried the clone tool but I still have trouble weilding it. Please help...

As always thanks so much to you guys...Johnny In Orlando

You might try the Shadow/Highlight image adjustment filter, then use the Dodge tool with a soft feathered brush and very low flow setting to further soften the shadows as necessary. I hope this helps.

There is also another possibility:

Open the photograph you woulf like to edit.
Add a new layer by pressing Alt + the new layer button (or Ctrl Shift N).(fig 1).
Select for MODUS. OVERLAY
Select 50% GRAY
press OK

press B
select a size and a feather you like.
Set the overlay for this tool to 30% (see fig 2)

Set white to your foreground color.
Paint over the dark shadow to make it lighter until you are satisfied.
