Adding PSD Filters to Alpha w/o collapsing layer
on Aug 31, 2007 at 8:14:00 pm

hi all,
i work at a tv station generating news graphics...typically we'll create psd files with alphas so they can be placed over animations.

One of our biggest irks is that when you apply a filter to a layer (let's say a drop shadow to some type) and option (apple+click) to hilight your selection and then go into the channels selection and select alpha channel, it will NOT include the drop shadow.

The only way for it to include the drop shadow is to Merge Layers and the option click and go to channels....

is there a way to do this without having to Merge Layers????

help

Richard,
thanks for your posting...

i wasn't able to find this:

is it a CS, CS2, or CS3 thing?

also, from the url http://www.photoshopforvideo.com/blog/files/ernotes.html

it appears that you have to merge any layer with styles on them in order to get their alpha to appear....

of course i might be wrong...and probably am

Actions are in CS2 and CS3

In the handout... you merge a COPY of the layer with style applied.. then trash it

Yu get the alpha channel you need and retain editability

Also, don't confuse styles with filter
