Photoshop cs2.... slow....
on Nov 26, 2005 at 7:35:48 am

Hello all,

There've been quite a few subjects on that in the past.
First of all, i'm not running any other application in the background, photoshop has about 1.8GB of ram allocated(only 200 meg used by the os), the cpu is an amd fx57, os xp sp2, so nothing too bad there. Video card's a geforce 6800GT with latest drivers. There's about 16 gig of swap on a dedicated sataII drive running at full speed. So you think it'd run fine?
Wrong.
For some reason i've been experiencing sluggishness, in cs2. CS1 does not exhibit much of that behaviour. After some days of frustration i decided to fire up the monitoring tools to see what ps2 was doing in these "long" periods of hanging, sometimes up to 3-4 minutes, often just 30s.
CPU Log shows no unsually high activity. Swap didnt either get affected. RAM was perfectly fine. So where's the bottleneck? well it appears photoshop cs2 decides to "reload" all the fonts, and recreate the whole index very often. Having a rather large collection of font(say ~500) that i keep in my folder(many projects, many different fonts, and, no, i'd rather not have to just have "30" fonts at a time since i need more). Sadly most of these fonts are pretty big, being cjk fonts. Because of that recreating the index takes eons since photoshop has to read ~3GB of data to do that.
Now why the hell photoshop cs2 does this? i have no idea, the font management of all photoshops always was crappy: bad handling of corrupted ones(there's none in mine, i'm 100% positive) as well as slow creating of indexes and the inability to create subfolders/categories in a font menu.

Anyway i'm a bit stuck there, and wondering if anyone has an idea on how to make photoshop be such an *** with fonts.

Having to wait minutes for the soft to work isnt exactly great...

In hope anyone has a cure,

Paul-Kenji Cahier

I use a tool called FontExpert to manage my fonts. It's really easy to move fonts around and that way Photoshop doesn't try and load everything at once.
