Channel Mixer

How come, that when I use the channel mixer to create a monochromatic image the result is always darker than expected?

For example: If I just look at the red channel of an RGB image, the resulting black and white image is much brighter than when I use the channel mixer and set it to 100% red and 0% green and blue.
