Someone has asked me to make a 20 Ft. x 20 Ft. billboard. I've made posters and flyers plenty of times, but are there any special considerations to be made in creating a bilboard? Photoshop won't let me make even a blank file with these dimensions at a 300 resolution. So I can imagine the lag when trying to design at this size. So is this to be divided into 4 square Photoshop files or is there a better way to work?
First contact whoever will be producing the billboard to ask them for their specifications. 300dpi is overkill - they won't want a file that large. Generally 72-100 dpi is fine. Some companies only want 50dpi. Or they may have you build it at 300dpi but at 25% of full size - every company is different.
The billboard co will also have advice on font sizes for a billboard of that size. Be sure to keep the verbage to a minimum - I've heard a figure if 7 words or less tossed around.
Thanks for the great info and the speedy response, Kim. 300 dpi does seem a little ridiculous now that I think about it. I'm glad I got that bad question out here before going to the print company. The link was nice too. Gave me a few things to think about while designing.
