What is the best of making a BLACK line a GREY line?
on May 10, 2005 at 12:09:58 am

Hi there

Basically Im scanning in drawings Ive done with a pen and want to make them into grey lines...at the moment Im selecting the line using magic wand and changing the tolerance depending and then creating a new layer and filling selection with grey. I then sometimes set this layer to exclusion just to add some of the texture to the grey layer. However sometimes the grey layer doesnt quite have the detail of the original drawing because its hard getting the right tolerance for the selection. Does anyone have tips?!

Thanks in advance

Dan

Copy your scanned image to a new channel. Channel window under the windows pull down menu. Hold down the command key and click on the channel. This will make a selection out of the image. Whatever is white is selected 100%, Black at 0% and levels of gray are made into a selection based upon the level of Gray. (10% gray, 10% opacity selected).

Now you can select a new layer and fill it with any color you like, or a gradient, or use it as a mask for another image.

Remember that white is selected at 100%, so if you've scanned your line art, you may need to invert the image. (Command I)

Good luck
