Changing color in Photoshop

I have this wedding picture with the couple holding black and white umbrellas. The groom is standing infront of a black spot of the umbrella. He is blended in too much. I want to change the whites of the umbrella to black and the blacks to white. Turning the white to black is no problem, but the blacks to white is much harder because of the light variation. Is there a best way to do this or must I just tediously paint over the black with white?

You could use a selection tool to select the umbrella and hit command-I to invert the colours. That may or may not work well, but give it a try with a quick rough selection first before investing in making a precise selection. Just to see if the shading works for you,

If you know how to use the channel mixer, you could find the channel that has the detail you want as use that to give the other channels some detail. If, lets say the Red channel has the best detail and there is nothing in the blue channel or a flat color go to channel mixer and copy the Red into the blue. You may want to keep a little of what already is one the blue. You may have to add a bit of noise or something to make the blue channel not exactly the same as the red.

This is a trial and error type deal. Without the actual image in front of me it would be impossable to give you a step by step instruction since every picture is different.
