Editing 4K using External HD USB-C to Thunderbolt 2?
on Jan 1, 2018 at 2:18:08 am

Hello,

I'm editing a short shot on RED at 4K.

Will an adapter like this:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266

Allow me to edit/playback 4K footage from an external 7200 rpm HD?

I'm using Premiere on an iMac with Thunderbolt 2, working with a glyph blackbox pro 8tb external 7200 rpm HD with USB-C.

Thanks!

If you're getting decent speeds (I use BlackMagic Disk Speed Test) then I cant see why not.
I was editing 4K off a Firewire800 drive on a 2008 MBP for years.
Its when you get into 6K and up that will be tricky.

the adapter will work fine. i use an akitio TB3 to TB2 to work with a pair of OWC thunderbay raids.

the one potential issue is the 7200 RPM drive. if it's not in a raid configuration you won't be able to work with 4k in full res.
