Red Epic hard drive space

Hi

I am able to start work on a feature film being shot on the red epic.

I was wondering what sort of hard drive space would I need?

I was think of getting a 1TB transportable hard drive for on set deliveries and then have an 8TB desktop hard drive to store the raw files on and then work off another hard drive with the converted footage on.

Does this sound good? any advice would be much appreciated. Also what would be the best hard drive to get?

Thanks from Mike

[Michael Pike] "I was wondering what sort of hard drive space would I need?"

Hi Michael,

You'll need to start by understanding the parameters of the RED format that you'll use (Resolution, Aspect Ration, Compression).

There's a good overview (and formula) here:

http://www.theblackandblue.com/2011/03/12/how-to-calculate-red-camera-data-...

Based on that, you can estimate daily data from daily footage estimates (in hours).

Remember to plan a back-up for both your camera originals and your transcodes.

Franz.

There is a great app called kata data that will give you every possible calculation you might need.
