Hi Ron,

Is this an upgrade to thunderbolt 2.

It doesn't say on your site whether this box supports the RedRocket X which I believe requires additional power.

I see its compatible with RedRocket Legacy but will it be forward compatible to the New REDRocket.

David

Hey David,

Yes this is an upgrade to Thunderbolt2 for our existing Mobile Rocket Thunderbolt users that purchased our product with Thunderbolt1 connectivity.

Our Mobile Rocket Thunderbolt WILL support the RED ROCKET-X physically and electronically. We designed the expansion chassis to have internal power cables within the unit that will power the RR-X with a LP4 to 6-Pin PCIe Video Card Power Adapter.

Yes the upgrade on the Mobile Rocket TB is for TB II. And yes it will power Red Rocket X. We have tested it here and it works great. As we know from testing , TB II does not go as fast as the specs say in real world but it is faster than TB I. We continue testing and looking for ways to optimize speed with the New Mac Pros. Stay tuned .....

Thanks Ron,

I'm sure you guys built a rock solid enclosure there and I know your relationship with Red goes back to the start of the rocket. Are you making an effort to build these enclosures any quieter? I have not "heard" the new RRX, but if the box is loud maybe it would be good to after some longer TB cables along with this setup.

Does the enclosure provide fast enough PCI lanes for the RRX? Or does RCX still give the message that it the slot does not allow the card to work at full speed.

Hey David,

We have been testing different fans to see if there is a quieter solution, but the RRX is going to be a powerful card. In turn it will most likely produce more heat than the previous card, so fans will be needed to keep this card cool. On the current Mobile Rocket Thunderbolt with gen.1 TB connectivity, there are no errors that come up when starting RCX. It sees the card in an 8x slot. Stay tuned to see how it behaves with a TB2 enclosure.

[Ron Amborn] "TB II does not go as fast as the specs say in real world but it is faster than TB I. "

Ron,

the rated specs say that TB2 should top out at right around 1.4GBps, and I have seen data speeds as fast as 1.365GBps, but I expect these to increase as TB2 gets more widely adopted.

Agreed on your speed numbers . What I am seeing is people saying 2.0 and not 1.4 which you have confirmed is real world numbers. The hype of TB 2 as you said is not quite there yet.

Ron,
With the theoretical limit of Thunderbolt 2 at approximately 1.6 Gigabytes per second. > Gbps x 0.8 = GBps< it is really hard to go much faster than that, most of the issues I have seen with devices so far are either as a limit of the caching structure on storage or as a physical limitation of the designs
