What hard drive is required to backup Red footage???
on Oct 21, 2013 at 11:59:04 am

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to shoot a short film in November. I think I'll record max between 3-5hrs for the
entire shoot. Most likely in 2k, still debating about 4k. My budget is around £200-£250 for 2
external hard drives, which I know is very little.

I wanted to know your opinion what will be the best hard drive to buy within that budget? As I'm
thinking is a lacie drive really needed and will a standard drive do the job.

I'll be editing on fcp7 and on the latest iMac.
I most likely will need help to figure out the best method of editing the footage.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Any decent fast I/O RAID will do.
Ive tested R3Ds across numerous options.
G-Tech eS Pro using SAS card in Mac Pro
Sonnet Tech PCI card with Dual SSD striped as one drive Thundebolt rMBP
G-Tech miniRAID FW800 with MacBook Pro

They all do the job but I opt for a ROCKET as far as my workflow goes.
I like watching my footage in real time and not Im not waiting for a GPU monster to drop on my lap :)
