RED Epic underexposed film.. ugh..
on Sep 19, 2013 at 7:00:01 am

Hey everybody,

Just directed a short on the Epic. Unfortunately some scenes are underexposed... ISO was dropped to 320 in some cases, low light, etc. Long story short I'm wondering how much 4k RAW can save me here? I know I'll have grain, but was thinking of maybe giving the film a grain look to help hide it, or incorporate it..

Whatever I choose, are there those out there that can save this type of thing? Or am I screwed? The film itself is suppose to be dark, low light.. just not that dark. Some scenes are fine, but there are some that are tough to make out unless I boost the FLUT, etc. and then it gets all grainy.. I'm not a colorist by any means so I'm hoping I just suck at it.

Thanks.

I've been testing Neat Video for noise reduction.
So far so good.
You can also get decent results in Resolve for noise reduction.

Thanks Eric,

I'll keep those in mind moving forward. I just finished syncing sound not too long ago and have begun an offline edit. We'll see what I get and how much extra $$$ I want to put into the cut once it's locked.

Thanks again!
Scott
