5k to 1080p full screen

I have been searching for some insight into this subject. When you see a film that was shot in 4 or 5k resolution and then you see it conformed to blu-ray 1080p full screen - what is the process of that? I know that you can transcode in Red CineX to 1080p but you still get the letter box. I'm interested in knowing the process for 5k to 1080p full screen. Thanks.

When dealing with aspect ratios that mis-match, you have two options:

1) Letterbox
2) Pan and scan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_and_scan

Many finishing programs like Speedgrade and Resolve do letterboxing and Pan and Scan as part of finishing. You can also do it, less easily/quickly, in your NLE.
