Which Diffusion Filter?
on May 25, 2013 at 6:32:27 pm

I am about to shoot a movie that takes place in a thick forest. Although I'd love to be able to shoot this only on overcast days this isn't possible so I will have to deal with deep shade sliced up by shafts of bright sunlight coming through the trees. I'm shooting digital (Red camera) and this is not a lighting situation these cameras handle very well.

Since it is a kind of fairly tale story I'm thinking.... balance between light and shadow the best I can-- we have no big lights, no genny just a few reflectors and bounce boards which I can use for closer shots of the characters, and then put a diffuser on the lens and let the highlights I can't control blow out and glow. If the diffuser raises the blacks a bit too that's OK.

What diffusion filter do you recommend for a situation like this?

thanks

Do a filter test. Are you going to use diffusion for wide and clean for close ups? I would start with Tiffen 1/2 pro-mist and see if you like 1/4 (subtle) or full pro-mist.

If you want a heavy mist look, I might go with full for wide shots and 1/2 for close-ups.

Thanks Angelo. yes I was wondering if I should use two- heavier for wide shots and less for the closeup where I'll have more control over the illumination. Appreciate your advice.
