What's the proper resolution to edit in when finishing at 4k?
on Sep 27, 2011 at 11:31:33 pm

I'm working on a project that is my 2nd time editing RED footage. The first time we finished it at 1080 with little color correction so we just used the Prores files we created to edit with to export the final video.

However, this project is intended for cinema and needs to be finished at 4k. I've already made 1080p Prores proxies. At this point, I just need to know how to finish in 4k. I've read all the different methods of relinking to the original R3D's, but I just want to make sure that it's ok to edit in 1080 and finish in 4k...or if I should have made 4k proxies to edit with.

Any suggestions are helpful.

Thanks!

By using the scoll wheel or search function you would find that about five threads down this topic is covered in great detail and fantastic solutions are revealed.

I would add that nothing "needs" to be finished in 4K. The vast, vast majority of theatrical releases are in 2K, and the vast majority of DI's are still being done in 2K. Wanting to finish in 4K and "having" to are two different things.

This is very good advice from Mike.

It also mean you will use 1/4, yes 1/4 the data (not half) that you would in a 4K online.

Playback, drivespace , etc all need to be optimized for 4K and it's mostly top facilities that are prepared for this.
