Roundtrip FCP to REDCINE-X to render new QT files

Has anyone been able to do this:

1. Edit in FCP using low res files
2. Export XML or EDL and conform in REDCINE-X
3. After making color tweaks, render high res QT files from REDCINE-X timeline
4. Export XML or EDL from REDCINE-X and conform in FCP to the high res QT files

If you have done this, how? And is there anyway to add handles too?

I tested this the other day in a recent build but I am not by the machine at the moment. It works, sorta. Must work on a timeline in RCX, then export XML back to FCP.
It was a super recent build of RCX.

Handles are added in your export preset.

This is exactly what I'm trying to do but there are two problems I'm facing:

1.) When importing the FCP XML in RedCine it only gives you the option of selecting one drive for the R3D media. Not sure why this would be but seems painfully problematic for projects with lots of media (ie. features)

2.) I can't find a way to export an XML from RCX. I've just used Clipfinder to conform the original XML to the rendered RCX files. The only problem is that many are missing clips so about 1/3 of my media is offline. Not sure where the problem entered into this one but could have been from the problem #1.

Anyone having success in this endeavor?

[Chad Terpstra] " can't find a way to export an XML from RCX."

Build 416ER does it. Not sure on #1 but I'd imagine you can manually relink if that option is checked.

Where do you get build 416?

Manual re-link would be painfully tedious on a long project - if it worked (which it doesn't).

Look in the recon forum, I think it's there.

Nothing seems to be fixed in the new build (416). To make things worse, RCX can't handle speed changes correctly. The list of reasons not to use it is growing quickly...

XML in general can't handle speed changes well, I wouldn't blame RCX for that one. The work around is to put the entire full length clip in another sequence or at the end of the sequence, without the speed change.

Are you saying you don't have an export XML function?

I just tried another really simple test and it works. You don't even really need the export XML function. The incoming XML to RCX has to be pretty simple. One track, no external audio, basically just your clips.

Import to RCX, export timeline to separate clips, go back to FCP and reconnect to your new renders.

It's not elegant, but it does work and you get the nice renders from RCX.

That workflow works until you start to have multiple clips from the same take (same R3D). While it's not the end of the world to have to reconnect a few clips manually it really falls apart when you have something like an interview shoot with lots of clips from the same take. It would be a huge help if RCX could just export an xml linking to the new media. Add to this a way to reference multiple drives when importing the XML and it would be a lot more usable.

So far I'm really loving the RedLogFilm gamma setting though. It's making me forget the extra pains of this workflow.

As I said, not elegant, but it works. It's really FCPs fault as it only connect through file name which is stupid, if it connected through tc and reel, we'd be all good. You can use FcpReconnect, by the way, to help you do that if you'd like.

RedLogFilm is available in Color with the latest drivers from Red, if you use Color.
