Anamorphic letterboxing
on Jan 22, 2011 at 10:41:24 am

Recently had a project shot on the RedOne camera in Anamorphic aspect ratio. For some reason a few of the clips have come with letterboxing.

How do I resolve this?

Here are two images to show you comparisons:

Additionally, I converted the clips using RedAlert to Quicktime files to 2048x1024 - AppleProRes 422 (HQ).

I dragged the files to a new Final Cut Pro project and it asked me to change the sequence to match the clips. Since then I've been editing fine, but just noticed the final few shots are letterboxed.

Cheers guys

"File not found." You can add images directly to a post. Click the Image Upload button on the reply window. It's the one that looks like a washing machine...

I tried to upload them, didn't seem to work funny enough.

Here are links that work:

They should work, if not they shouldn't be too important. The sequence and majority of the clips are 2248x1020 whilst some of the clips are 2240x960 and are letterboxed.

The project was shot on the RedOne in anamorphic aspect ratio.

My workflow is in Final Cut Pro. Any suggestions as to having those odd clips to match the others, and also why this problem has occured?

Cheers

Yeah that's a mistake made by the DP.... unfortunately shot in the wrong aspect ratio. Your best bet is scale them up a bit in FCP and crop off the sides.

Cheers for the response Noah.

So I should keep the sequence at 2248x1020 and scale/crop the few 2240x960 clips?

Also I converted the clips using RedRushes, but now I've been advised to re-convert them using REDCINE-X as it will give a much more accurate result. Is this true?

Thanks

Well it kinda depends- personally I conform everything to 1080p ProRes and go from there. Unless you're going to film it doesn't make much sense to edit at the native RED frame sizes as they will be scaled down anyway.
