Reframing 4K footage
on Dec 3, 2010 at 6:05:19 pm

I'm assistant editor on an independent feature shot on RED and finishing to 2k, and the director wants to do a bunch of zooms and reframing with the RED 4k footage. Right now we're doing an offline edit in FCP, and I wanted to know realistically how much we can zoom in without compromising the image quality of the final master.

This might be an obvious question, but I just want to be sure we're not playing with the image too much and screwing ourselves over when we go to conform the original 4k footage. Thanks so much!

4/2=2. You can scale up 200% and still be at the 4k native size.

I should add you wont be able to do this in FCP due to the 2k limit.

Yeah, I know that's the obvious answer, but I've heard differing reports about how reframing to 200% looks in actual practice, so I wanted to confirm from someone who's been through the whole process and finished to 2k. Just trying to cover all my bases.

You an run your own test with an FCP > Color > reframe > 2k render.

You shouldn't have too many problems. What are you finishing on?
