RED Workflow - Sending Project to Color House

Quick question about RED workflow...

In the past two years we've been getting a lot of RED footage for edits. We generally transcode to ProRes and rarely go back to the R3Ds (sad, I know). When projects are sent to a color house, generally a ProRes master is what we send. We have a project coming up where more extensive color correction is in the budget and we will be sending off all the R3Ds to the color house so they can color using the RAW files.

What I would like to know is what's standard workflow for this? So far it seems it makes sense to edit off the proxies then export and EDL. I've also heard some people talking about using DPX files. If anyone could weigh in, it'd be appreciated.

Thanks.

To elaborate a bit more, I just want to make certain that editing from the proxies then exporting the EDL from FCP is a solution that will fit any color workflow whether the color house is using Scratch or RCX.

I usually advise clients to deliver:

1. Locked sequence in an Avid bin or FCP project.
2. The original media (R3D files)
3. Picture reference (QT movie or a video tape)

You can also give the facility an EDL but depending on the equipment they use they may have a better way of getting your project across platforms. EDLs don't carry over anything beyond cuts, dissolves and a constant rate speed changes. That being said, feature films are typically simple and don't have many effects applied in the offline timeline that need be rebuilt in the DI.

Thanks Igor. We had a call with the color house, and their workflow is actually what you suggested. They will take an FCP project file, the source R3D files, and a reference QT movie. They will use Automatic Duck to handle the conform.

Thanks for your input and also for HDhead.com. Ironically, I was on your site last week. Great resource.
