Down Converting ProRes 4444

Hello,

I just started working on a RED project in FCP 7. So far, the RED media was transcoded to ProRes 4444 and sunk with the production audio, however it has just now come to light that this codec might not bode well for playback on some of my teams workstations due to the large file size. My question: is it possible to down convert the 4444 media to ProRes LT and relink the sunk production audio? Also, will down converting cause any problems with reconforming to the RED media later on?

Any guidance in how to implement this process would also be much appreciated.

Thank you!
Josh

Yes.

Of course it is possible.

You could set up a compressor preset to do this on all of your footage with burned in TC.

I would test a few files and be sure to leave the setting "same as source" except for the codec or file size of course.

Done properly this can also all be relinked ot your R3D media.. :)

You might also want to take a look at the recompress feature inside the FCP Media manager tool. You could use it and create a whole new set of files and convert your proress 4444 files to pro res LT.
