Cost of HD Lenses
on Aug 20, 2007 at 9:37:03 pm

Hi all,
looking at decent HD lenses lately I can not help myself but to ask WHY are they so expansive..
Normal, basic standard zoom lens is about US15,000...something wide is about $20,000-30,000.
Why can not we have on market industrial HD lenses at industrial prices...what is the point in buying cheap HD camera like F330 or HPX-500 if one gets hit with $15,000 for STANDARD HD lens??
...especially if you can order RED Cinema primes and zooms for much less.
Maybe we could have somebody from Fujinon,Canon to answer this HD lenses pricing structure..

Better get that RED stuff ordered today because they're about to run out.

HD lenses are built by hand. Each element is closely inspected and then matched with other elements. This a long, arduous process that takes days instead of an hour. Regular lenses are built assembly line style (of course).*

*according to Tom Bender from Canon and Chuck Lee from Fujinon

To answer part two of your question: A really good standard def lens IS an industrial strength HD lens. Maybe someone should make an adapter so we can snap those RED lenses onto our F-900s and Varicams that we were told to toss in the dumpster a year and a half ago by the RED crowd. Bitter toward those idiots? Not me.

A few years ago, our Fujinon A13x6.5 SD zooms (normally
attached to our 530p XDCAMs) could be found bundled with HD
bodies, but to purchase them individually costed around

[xgfmedia] " introduction of RED"

I was anxiously awaiting it's arrival but if you'll think back ten years, the entire video world was chomping at the bit to get an item called the Trinity from Play technologies. They promoted the crap out of that thing because it could do everything under the sun. When it finally did come out, the entire technology went down the drain because the world had switched to NLEs and the product, which lived up to it's promises in every way in the analog tape world, went down the toilet. It's now called the Globecaster and nobody wants one.

But, just like the RED, people were telling me that if I didn't get one, my business would fail because I didn't have the Trinity. They took so long to perfect it that they released an outdated product.

And some people wonder why we didn't jump on the RED bandwagon. Weren't they showing the Peter Jackson footage 6 months ago?

I suspect the Jackson footage must have shot, at least, over 6
months ago if only because of the productional lengths they
went to in getting those planes (etc.) involved, and then,
of course, was having to work on a then untested post workflow.
I'd love to see more than that 1 min online clip of it, though,
because it does look impressive ... Like Fincher says of Viper:
'It's not film, it's not HD, it's...something else.' - And I
think it's that disposition which is possibly key in what differentiates
the look of SD and

Lucky for some. Hopefully it'll prod Sony into speeding up
production on the 2K XDCAMs.

Darren.

I bet Sony will eventually go to 2k. I also predict that they will make a fixed lens 2/3" 422 camera to replace the up coming XDCAM EX.
