Ideas for RED audio workflow
on Apr 11, 2010 at 3:02:15 am

I'm currently working on a film where the audio is being recorded separately from the red footage. I'm the assistant editor, so I need to sync dailies. Normally, we edit with proxies in FCP and then send an EDL through wiretap to Smoke. How can I sync and keep to this basic blueprint, or at least still be able to finish in 4K? Thanks!

A merged clip should still work fine. Video timecode and reel name wouldn't change. You should test it.

What does the audio mixer(s) need? Typically I'd just run out an SD mixdown of video(they often just ask for DV) along with an OMF of the audio and make sure I switch off the lights on my way out of the office.

I'm a bit of a newbie, so I'm not completely sure what you mean by a merged clip. I'm especially unfamiliar with red, so I really don't know how to easily merge the proxies with synced audio.

Also, the audio mixers need an OMF and the original audio files, but I'm just trying to figure out how to make this easy for the editor.

I just learned about merging clips yesterday. I'm new to RED, on-set data wrangling for the first time. Pretty much, import the audio and one of the proxy video files to FCP and do a Mark In at a convenient synch point (the clapper may appear an obvious choice). Then select both clips, right click and choose the 'Merge Clips' option. Self-explanatory from there.

Thank you! I'll try this.
