Color banding in RED files
on Mar 29, 2010 at 2:16:07 am

Am editing in fCP 6 RED files that have been processed using Red Rushes, full quality debayer 4096 x 2304. I'm still getting color banding on f.g. soft focus objects and scenes with fog atmosphere, etc. Export to Quicktime file at full res looks much better, but anytime the file is compressed with compressor for DVD, Apple TV, etc - I get the banding.

Any ideas anyone?

Going to any 8-bit codec with pretty much get you banding in graduated areas.

The way around it is 10-bit uncompressed straight from r3d.

What do you feed into Compressor? It should be ProRes, nothing less.

Plus, very soft image areas from the RED are just too clean for heavy compression like MPEG-2 or H.264. Add a tad of noise to avoid banding. You would have the same problem with very soft ramps from a computer. I've never seen banding coming out of the RED One itself on any proper monitoring deviceā€¦

Yes, this is ProRes422 HQ. I'll try your suggestion about adding a bit of noise.
Thanks all.
