Can the power of the RED Rocket be used in other applications, like FCP?

NO.

Think of it as a computer in your computer that is only there to accelerate the rendering of RED footage and to be able to play it back in real time.

You could send a SMPTE HD-SDI to a monitor or to a KONA card (not in the same computer).

Yeah it's an amazingly fast, thoroughbred one-trick pony.

I can only hope that you spent the money for the Red Rocket, to save your valuable time, so you can generate income doing other tasks (like doing editing and graphics, etc.). If you feel that you have purchased this $5000 board, and now say "wow, I spend 5 grand - how will I ever get my money back" - I can only ask "why did you buy it in the first place !".

The Red Rocket is for video professsionals that work with .r3d files on a daily basis, to free them from render hell. No one else should own this product.

Yes Bob,

You are describing a vanity or have-to-have-it purchase.

I find that most of the time an overnight render on the old 8 core mac does the trick.

Not with the new MX Sensor-the rocket is all but required, since only build Cine-X 158 will handle those files correctly and you cannot easily import into FCP.

Then you are working on smaller projects, since my shoot last week I have been processing 400Gs of STEREO/3D capture and it has taken nearly 3 days to process all of the files without my rocket rig (onset with someone else).

Gary,

You are always on the bleeding edge. There are still over 6000 M sensors out there and you can process X footage through redcine - X .

RR depends on what you shoot and your business model.

Anything's possible but I'm not going to expect that. We're doing a lot of RED grading in Iridas and now DaVinci. Still pricey but a lot more affordable for your midrange post boutiques.

Gee, thanks Bob. That was quite a helpful little lecture there. I'm curious about what made you feel that somehow I was not in need of or possibly worthy enough to own one of these things?
