Best Red work Flow from FCP to Quantel for Color CC
on Mar 21, 2010 at 7:57:52 pm

I've searched through the Red and color forums and not sure if I have found the definitive answer.

I am editing a commercial shot on the Red at 4K 23.98. I am ending in FCP 7.01 with Kona 3. I will be color correcting on a Quantel system.

Here is what I am thinking:

Process all the footage to ProRes (HQ) with RedRushes.
Edit in FCP.
The Quantel Facility said bring the FCP sequence and media to reconnect to R3D.

Am I better off working in Proxy or converting to ProRes. This is where I get lost and can't find a definitive answer. I've googled, searched Red User net, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Warren

Does the Quantel support R3D? I find the ProRes workflow far smoother- just requires an EDL sidetrip in Clipfinder to link back to the R3Ds when you're locked.

A couple of days ago I worked on a couple of videos for super-star Akon.

The prep-work delivery was done as specified by a post house using a Da Vinci. Things happened... so I received the project instead but had to work with the elements created for the DaVinci.

The DPX sequence was loaded into Color with an EDL. Unfortunately, the EDL never locked as a cut list to the DPX in Apple Color. We tried everything. No luck.

Still, we managed to grade, render and deliver on time... but with that in mind, I am not sure what exactly happened. It could have been that FCP 7 just screwed up the EDL or the XML.

Be careful and keep us up-to-date with the progress :)

[Warren Eig] "This is where I get lost and can't find a definitive answer."

The only definitive answer you can get for your situation is by the Quantel Facility. They know how they like things.

My hunch is that either would work as both workflows provide basically the same information. Using Scratch, I've conformed both projects edited with proxy files and ProRes files without issues. It's actually very straight forward. My guess is that Quantel's workflow is just as easy, but I would suggest asking the facility which they prefer.

As far as editing goes, I'm a really big fan of transcoding R3D files to ProRes Proxy for offline editing.
