RED to Apple Pro Res - Color Banding
on Feb 19, 2010 at 12:15:35 am

Okay, so I'm probably trying to do this the wrong way BUT:
My plan is to process all my RED files through Red Rushes into full sized Apple Pro Res HQ files and edit those into a finished product for output to DigiBeta and HD master.
The problem I'm running into is color banding. Is there a way around this? Should I be editing this project a different way?

Yeap! The only way to avoid the banding is using the FULL RES debayer. At our studio, we NEVER ever use FCP to convert files that will end up on a finishing session or tape master. FCP's Log and Transfer is a big No-No for any finishing or mastering.

I guess I'm really green then, what do you use for final output then if not FCP?

So when you say Full Res Debayer can you explain that? I'm sure this increases the size of the files, yes?

I can't seem to find any specific settings walk-throughs for RED file prep.

Ohhh Ok. I got it! :)

You can totally use RedRushes but only select the HIGH RES debayer option to avoid the banding. Then is a mater of waiting for the process to complete. The High Res debayer process takes a very long time but it will give you the most quality conversion. One hour of footage can easily take more than 12 hours to convert.

If you want a faster processing time then RedRocket is the solution. Our RedRocket services process files in almost real-time. Then you can continue with FCP as usual.

Hope this helps... :)
