I'm not a RED user (I wish I had one though) but I thought this might be something you all would be interested in.

Hmm, it's about time they released some information on the Scarlet.

Looks pretty impressive if it lives up to the specs... I guess I should start saving up.

With all of the new features on the Scarlet/Epic, it's going to make the REDONE look like it's 10 years old. Other cameras are going to feel ancient.

Now we just need to actually be able to buy them and we can all sleep well at night.

Technically, it'll be after the purchase of the camera when my sleepless nights will start!

I was just reading about this camera today and doing some research on it. 5k out the door for a RED cam seems a pretty solid deal. Then I started adding up the cost of modules and other add-ons and totaled out around 8k. A good price, but now I'm wondering if picking up an EX3 would be a better idea at that price.

When I read it, it was the 'brain', a fixed 8x zoom, CF module, 2.8 inch touchscreen, REDmote, and a battery plus a travel charger, and will retail for $4,750
Ok, you might want the other bits that one normally gets (a nice matte box maybe to show the folks your serious..). But what more are you looking for?
I think as an entry-level price for a Red camera bundle $4750 is pretty good! Too good, in fact. I completly expect the price to jump nearer to the release date. Also , given the chip size and features, its difficult to compare it with anything in the market at the moment within the sub-$9k bracket.

What do you fellow CCers think?

Well I have to see the released cam but compared to most others in the sub-$10K class it has a lot of advantages- higher resolution, higher bitrate and raw codec, interchangeable high-quality optics, etc.

I have to say, a full set of the mini-primes would go rather well. I'm just hoping that they offer a proper Scarlet Cinema bundle, rather than just the Fixed lens package

I really want to play with those mini primes. sometimes 2/3 is a lot better than S35. FIghting to keep things in focus is not always that much fun. horses for courses as they say.

I agree, it is a lot of camera for the money, well done RED. I just hope the price does not jump between now and the date when they start shipping and the quality is there.

I can see it appealing to a lot of people/production companies.

I can't help but think that it makes cameras like the EX1/EX3, all NXCAMs and all prosumer HDV varients look a little overpriced......

It will be interesting to see how the market will react. What is needed is the workflow for the Scarlet from shooting to finished edit to be simple, RED products these days still have a rep for not being the easiest for workflow, rightly or wrongly, and that does put a lot of people off.

Hopefully we are about to see a big change. An exciting time, maybe Canon will finally release something radical too....
